Year 22: Event 1 - New red Nightwing costume

Bruce takes back the cowl and decides to stay put in Gotham so Dick returns to being Nightwing. To mark this new era, he modifies his costume. He feels a sense of relief at being 'me' again. He learnt a lot about himself during his time as Batman and feels it made him stronger.

Comment
A fresh start with the reboot and a change to the timeline. Dick is now 21 years old in the comics, so it would have to be a very late 21. Is the red a tribute to his days wearing red, green and yellow... or to the blood that has been spilt over the years?

Year 22: Event 2 - Dick moves out of the Mansion and Penthouse and into his own apartment

With Bruce now based back in Gotham, Dick moves out and gets an apartment of his own. As we have seen in the past, Dick prefers to live in the worst part of the place he has chosen to protect... something he and Bruce disagree about.

With no Alfred to tidy up after him, Dick is sloppy and reverts to his 'questionable' eating habits.

Comment
I do think the costume lying on the ground takes it a bit far. Dick may be sloppy but I donít see him compromising his secret in any way.

Year 22: Event 3 - Face a pumped up Ventriloquist with Damian

Villains in Arkham are being pumped up on Bane like-venom.

Batman calls for help and so Nigthwing and Robin face the Ventriloquest.

They do not appear to be successful.

Comment
Nice to see Dick continuing to work with Damain. These two have a 'spark' when they work together.

Year 22: Event 4 - Assists in taking down Batwing Villain, Massacre

Batwing and Batman race back to the city hoping to stop the killer Massacre from assassinating the last two members of aAfrica's lost super-team, The Kingdom! Batman contacts his team and mobilizes them. So, with Batgirl slipping back into her Oracle role and feeding Batman and Nightwing intel, Batman on his way with Batwing, Nightwing and Robin are left on the ground searching for the missing members

After finding the two missing members dead, Nightwing and Robin are contronted with both Massacre and a giant robot. Nightwing and Robin keep Massacre and the robot (suite of armor being operated remotely) busy until Batman and Batwing arrive. Then Batwing takes on Massacre while Nightwing, Robin and Batman combine to take down the robot. We see fantastic teamwork from this trio. Once the armor is taken down, the security protocol activates and the team only have seconds to escape before it explodes.

Comment
The introduction of the New 52 has seen a lot of teamwork situations for the Bat-family. I hope this trend continues.

Year 22: Event 5 - Impersonates Joker in Arkham

Batman is investigating a guard at Arkham who he believes is on the take. He puts Dick on the inside impersonating the Joker using an EMP (holograpic) mask. Dick relishes the job. When Matthews unlocks all of the doors inside Arkham as a diversion so he can escape, the Joker (Dick) rushes to Bruce's aid.

Great moment as we see the original dynamic duo back in action... even if it is Batman and the Joker.

Year 22: Event 6 - Attends Bruce's Benefit to Announce Investing in Gotham's Furture

With Tim and Damian, Dick puts on his suit and bowtie and supports Bruce as he announces his dreams for Gotham's future. Everybody who's anyone is in attendance.

Bruce states that he is about to invest heavily in construction to renew Gotham and asks the rest of Gotham's rich to join him.

Alfred points out that during the construction, Bruce will be building more Batbunkers around the city. Something that will likely be very useful to Dick in the future.

Dick attends (perhaps in Bruce's place) the ground breaking ceremony for the New Westside Promenade as part of Bruce's plan to invest in the city. As he is leaving a haggard man accosts him and says, "They're real. They're everywhere and they're sendin him for you... all of us." As security pulls him away, he scratches Dick's arm.

Dick is very much a part of Bruce's life... both his business life and his Bat-life.

Year 22: Event 8 - Haly's Circus returns to Gotham

For the first time since the death of the Flying Graysons, Haly's Circus returns to town. While Dick has visited his friends in the circus a handful of times in other cities, never in Gotham and emotionally he feels unbalanced.

When he does visit, he reflects on reflects on how his life changed when Bruce adopted him. Dick discovers that Pop has retired and that his son Bryan has taken over. He reconnects with past friends - including Raya, a red-headed aerialist who is very 'hands-on' with Dick. Dick immediately 'feels' a connection toward her and he wonders if it is just because she is a red-head.

Dick is invited to take a turn on the trapeze which he accepts, putting on a show, wowing all below... but deliberately misses a catch so he doesn't look too polished.

Comment
First, the word 'adopted' jumped out at me. In DCís NEW 52 reboot, did Bruce actually adopt Dick?... or is this word being used interchangeably with becoming Bruceís ward. I guess we will have to wait and see. However, for the purpose of this timeline, it did happen.

Dick is facing great change at this time in his life... moved out of the penthouse, no longer Batman, Tim has moved away, Bruce is back and has taken over raising Damian... and now is confronting the tragedy that stole his parents from him.

Year 22: Event 9 - Attacked by Saiko

On his way home from the circus, he is attacked by a masked villain (Saiko) sporting blades very much like the Marvel hero Wolverine. Saiko declares ďIíve been looking for you, Mr Grayson.Ē Dick assesses the situation in an instant and decides this is a hired killer. In an effort to distract the killer, Dick attracts the attention of some cops and then rushes off to change. He returns in time to see the two cops having their throats slashed.

Nightwing enters the fray. Saiko warns him that he has no idea who is is protecting. "Grayson isn't innocent. Dick Grayson is the fiercest killer in all of Gotham and he doesn't even know it." When civilians are endangered, Dick breaks off the fight to save them and Saiko gets away.

Comment
Thus begins Dick's journey into learning about the real purpose of the circus.

Year 22: Event 10 - Mr. Haly leaves Dick the Circus and Saiko learns Nightwing's identity

Raya turns up at Dick's place asking for help. Our knight in shining armour canít turn his back on beautiful damsel in distress and so whisks her off to Atlanta in a jet... it pays to be the son of Bruce Wayne... only to discover that Raya doesn't need help. Mr Haly needs to speak to Dick tonight... the old man is dying of cancer.

Pop gives Dick the deed to the Circus explaining it was all supposed to go to his parents. The old man also knows Dick's secret... that he is Nightwing. Cryptically he states... "I've made a lot of mistakes over the years, Dick... and I have a lot of regrets, but my biggest is what happened to you. Haly's is part of who you were supposed to be... what you family was supposed to be which is why when I'm gone, you're the one who has to be there."

On the trip home, Dick receives a call from Saiko, who knows his identity having tortured it out of Mr Haly. He challenges Dick to come and save Haly. Dick turns the plane around and returns as Nightwing. He defeats Saiko but in order to save Mr. Haly, he must allow the villain to escape. Sadly, Mr Haly dies as a result of Saiko's beating but not before he telling Dick that 'they' are trying to kill us because of 'the secret'... what the circus really is. Then he provides a clue stating the answer is in the 'heart' of it.

Comment
Mr Haly's regrets about what happened to Dick - In light of what the circus really was... a selection ground for Talons... one has to wonder if Mr Haly regrets Dick didn't become one of these mindless assassins.

Answers in the heart of it - Why he didn't just say, "there's a book hidden in the frame of the Big Top', which would have taken about the same amount of time, I don't know. Then we wouldn't have had a mystery, I guess. :)

On the jet when visiting Mr Haly, Dick and Raya begin a causual relationship. Neither is looking for anything permanent... particularly as Raya is in a relationship with Raymond, but Dick doesn't know this at this stage. This 'fling' lasts for several weeks.

Dick is young, good-looking, the son of a Gotham billionaire and a sweetheart. He simply wants to live for now at this point and enjoys Raya's company.

Year 22: Event 13 - Mr Haly's Funeral, Confront Zane and decides to stay with Circus

Dick attends Mr Haly's funeral and takes over ownership of the circus... something that is not popular with Bryan. He and Raya have a heart to heart in which Raya states Dick has always looked foward, not back. They discuss Raymond who died many years earlier and then Zane who is now a broker for hit men. Raya suggest that maybe he may know who hired Saiko to kill Mr Haly.

With the circus moving on to Philadelphia, Nightwing goes to confront his childhood friend, Zane. Zane is shown to be cold and brutal... a far cry from the fun-loving boy from Dick's memories. Zane attacks Nightwing using mircowave signals. Dick reverses the signal and takes Zane down but does not hand him over to the police. Rather, he warns him to get change his professession.

Dick returns to the circus train which is on its way to Philadelphia. He goes to Raya's room and admits, ďYouíre right, you know. About me always looking forward and never looking backÖ about not dealing with the past." However, he explains that he didn't attend Raymond's funeral but couldn't bring himself to say goodbye again (to Raya) and that heís back because that is where My Haly wanted him to be. The pair then continue to 'enjoy' each other's company.

Comment
We see here how much Dick values friendship when he gives Zane a second chance and when he admits to attending his Raymond's funeral.

Comment
I liked Barbara as the original Bagirl. Loved her as Oracle, but as the new Batgirl... Doesn't work for me. She has always been incredibly self-centred with a chip on her shoulder and so much to prove... and nothing as changed. Sadly, Dick loves her... and always will.

Barbara purpuses Spinebener to Florida and knowing Dick is there with the circus, decides to drop in. Raya is unimpressed when Barbara arrives.

Barbara confesses regrets at how they left things in Gotham and convinces Dick to come out and help her with her case. She then proceeds to pry into his life. When the prying becomes too much, Nightwing heads off to get a closer look at the dealers but returns to save Batgirl's life... Spinebender has taken Nightwing's shape. Once they take the shape shifter down, they return to the circus train and the pair make peace, confortable with their relationship.

When Barbara emerges from Dick's room, Raya confronts her and Barbara tries to put things right, stating that Dick cares for Raya and is a great guy. When Barbara leaves, Raya is about to knock on Dick's door but chooses not to. (Based on what we find out later, this was a attack of conscience. Dick is a great guy and she is setting him up to be killed.)

There is a closeness between Barbara and Dick but at this point, both are happy to pursue separate lives.

After failing to talk everyone out of the show, Dick goes along with it but installs montion sensors in the tactical spots in the huge building where the show will take place.
