Mary Elizabeth Lloyd (Grayson) and John Frederick Grayson are something of an enigma. More often than not, they are portrayed in one image in a comic showing them falling to their deaths as part of a description of Dick's background or a memory flashback. Most infromation comes in the from of 'tidbits' tossed out during a lengthened glimpse of them. As a matter of fact, between 1940 and 1980 they were rarely mentioned. With all of the revisions of Dick's origin and the changing of his age every time you blink, I'm not sure how much about the Graysons is still in continuity. So, the best way to give you some background, is to provide a timeline of their portrayal in the comics. At the moment, I am simplying adding as I come across them. If you are awared of a comic or issue that I haven't listed, please let me know. I have yet to catelogue the recent "Flashpoint: Deadman and Flying Graysons"

1940

Robin is introduced for the first time. While there is very little background about his parents we do learn the following.
(a) The name of the circus - Haly.

(c) Dick's parents are named as John and Mary and we see the fall as a result of a mob protection racket.

I found this an interesting issue. The text reads "His part of the act over, Dick descends to the Tanbark and watches proudly as the ringmaster announces his father's specialty, the Triple Spin! There is a tense silene, save for the drum roll, as John Grayson flies out... somersaults thrice... and straightens out..." There is no mention of Dick's quadrauple. It is John's triple that is the show stopper.

This story is one of DC's many attempts to 'update' Dick's origins. They take great pains to show that Dick was ten when his parents died... up two years from the eight it had always been. In this story - where Dick is recounting his origins to Joey - we see that at the age of five, Dick started performing without a net... but with his father standing below with a small trapoline, every ready to catch his child and take him safely to some mattresses. We see how proud John was of his son. Yet again, see the death of John and Mary.
